I was also affected by this issue. But maybe I was one of the lucky ones. I got hold of support and they were aware of the issue so I got an out of warranty replacement free of any charge. I’m in a country with no official service centre or support. UPS picked up my broken device at my doorstep, and I got a new one a few days later delivered at my doorstep. This when I was all a couple of months past my warranty. Got 2 years warranty on my new replacement device. Surface Pro 4 i5. 256GB. I was really happy with the service and the free of any charge replacement, but annoyed it happened in the first place.
